Title
The Balanced Researcher
Description
Presented by Hugh Kearns
So you're a researcher. Chances are then that you are pretty busy. Firstly there's your research. Writing proposals. Getting ethics approval. Dealing with the paperwork. Meetings. Applying for grants. Getting grants and then managing the money and the people. Writing reports. And that's all before you even get to the actual research. Then there's papers to write, rejection letters to deal with and conferences to attend.
And for most people research is just one of the things you do. You might teach or tutor, run demonstrations, or manage a unit or even have another completely different job. And that's just work. No matter how much you enjoy your research it's a fair bet that there are other parts to your life too. For example you probably have a family or friends, you may have social commitments and you may even have some personal interests.
This workshop will describe the most useful strategies that thousands of researchers have found helpful in balancing the many demands on their time.
• how to be effective with your time
• specific strategies for coping with email overload
• picking the right things to work on
• dealing with distractions and interruptions
• how to say NO gracefully
• setting boundaries
• looking after me
Who is it for? Anyone who is juggling research with many other demands
Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher. He regularly lectures at universities across the world and has recently returned from lecture tours of the UK and the US which included lectures at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Berkeley and Stanford. His areas of expertise include self-management, positive psychology, work-life balance, learning and creativity. He draws on over twenty five years of experience as a leading training and development professional within the corporate, financial, education and health sectors in Ireland, Scotland, North America, New Zealand and Australia. He has coached individuals, teams and executives in a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors. Hugh lectures and researches at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. He is widely recognised for his ability to take the latest research in psychology and education and apply it to high-performing people and groups. As a co-author with Maria Gardiner, he has published ten books which are in high demand both in Australia and internationally.

Title
Shut Up & Write 22 Apr 2021
Description
What is Shut Up & Write!?
Shut Up & Write! is a writing group that not only helps you get words written but is fun, social and supportive. Academia can be a lonely business... only if you let it be.
Writing groups have magical powers for graduate students and researchers: They can boost the quality of your writing, keep you going when you're distracted or despondent, accelerate your productivity, increase your confidence – as well as kick-start many of the essential skills required in a research career. Plus, they offer a lot of other benefits to help you survive and thrive (Aitchison and Guerin, 2014).
What is involved?
Using the 'Pomodoro Technique', we'll spend 25 minutes writing in silence followed by a ten-minute break where you can chat with others, share ideas or go for a walk. We'll repeat this cycle four times and you will be amazed at just how much you can achieve in two hours.
To help you focus your writing and maximise productivity, it helps to have specific goals (i.e. section of a paper or chapter and number of words).
We also encourage you to put your phone on silent and stay off the internet during writing time.
How will it work?
Online: Remote participants are invited to login to the Shut Up & Write! Zoom room by 9:25am where we will live stream the session from the UC campus. Zoom link and password will be sent to you in a Confirmation Email after registration.
In person: To abide by health and safety regulations, social distancing measures will be in place. Participants attending in person must ensure 1.5 metres distance from all other participants. Disinfectant wipes will be provided for you to wipe down your desk station before and after use.
Please arrive by 9:25am and settle in. Coffee/drink orders will need to be placed before the first pomodoro (starting at 9:30am) with the Researcher Development representative. Coffees will be made by the café barista and clearly labelled. Participants are instructed to take only their labelled drink to minimise handling of orders.
